Mayan Astrology

The Personal Tree of Life

Mayan Astrology has undoubtedly been an enriching and manifold discipline. The probability is great that a part of this knowledge has disappeared between the “Conquista’s” codex auto-da-fés and the massacres of all those who resisted assimilation.

The method we present here is the one called “KEJ cross” or “Personal Tree of Life” as described in Kenneth Johnson’s book entitled “Jaguar Wisdom” and in Carl Johan Calleman’s seminars.

Other methods exist as the one describe in the book “How to Practice Mayan Astrology” by Bruce Scofield and Barry C. Orr. Others remain secret to this day.

How to determine one’s mayan Day Sign

Before using this astrological method called “Personal Tree of Life”, the first thing is to calculate one’s Mayan birth sign, i.e. the TZOLK’IN day in which you were born.

For this, go to the page “How to calculate your Mayan birth sign

A Mayan birth sign is made of two elements:

-A number also called energy, tone or intention. There are 13 of them and they form a recurrent cycle of 13 days each called trecena and representing the symbolic “week” of the TZOLK’IN.

-A dayglyph, each one representing a symbol which has a profound meaning for the Mayas.

General Presentation of the Personal Tree of Life

The Personal Tree of Life or KEJ cross is the image of a cross made of 5 elements:

-The Mayan birth “sign” in the center,

-A vertical axis figuring the past, the present (the Mayan birth “sign”) and the future,

-An horizontal axis figuring the masculine and feminine components of the individual.

Here is how Kenneth Johnson presents this tree of life in his book:

“Stand up and face the East with your extended arms so as to form a cross. Imagine your future is in front of you eastwise, with your children, all your offsprings and your lives to come. Behind you, the West with all your ancestors and your past lives. On the right, the South with your masculine qualities and all the men who come to cross your life path. On the left, the North with your feminine qualities and all the women you meet in your life path.”

In your heart, in the center of this tree formed by your body, is your Mayan birth sign, the TZOLK’IN day during which you were born. Four other TZOLK’IN days hold the 4 directions: past, future, masculine, feminine.

Traditionally, this tree of life is represented as follows, with reversed direction positions (West upwards) in relation to the Mayan representation of the 4 directions (East upwards).

How to Determine a Personal Tree of Life  4 directions

Let us examine how to determinate the 4 TZOLK’IN days holding the 4 directions of this personal tree of life:

The classic approach is to take a TZOLK’IN in its unial form (go to the unial page) and to count, starting on one’s birth day (included, i.e. counting that day as “1”).

  1. -By counting 9 going forward in the reckoning of the days, one obtains the day of the FUTURE,

  2. -By counting 9 ascending in the reckoning of the days, one obtains the day of the PAST,

  3. -By counting 7 going forward in the reckoning of the days, one obtains the day of the FEMININE,

  4. -By counting 7 ascending in the reckoning of the days, one obtains the day of the MASCULINE.

Here, the 9 and the 7 have particular meanings. According to Kenneth Johnson, they represent the weaving of life (9 for the 9 month gestation) and death (the 7).

Let us take, for instance, the 4-AHAU case which is the “archaeological” starting day of the Long Mayan Count:

- BIRTH sign, 4-AHAU (day 160 of the TZOLK’IN)

- Day of the FUTURE: 12-LAMAT (day 168 of the TZOLK’IN)

- Day of the PAST: 9-EB (day 152 of the TZOLK’IN)

- Day of the FEMININE: 10-CIMI (day 166 of the TZOLK’IN)

- Day of the MASCULINE: 11-IX (day 154 of the TZOLK’IN)

A few tricks which will allow you not to go wrong:

The days of the PAST and FUTURE belong to the same direction (colour) as the BIRTH one.

The days of the MASCULINE and FEMINE belong to the opposite direction (colour), i.e. North for South, West for East and vice-versa.

Here below, are presented the numerical determination methods, with no need to reckon on an unial TZOLK’IN. They articulate in two elements:

  1. -How to determinate the dayglyphs for the PAST, FUTURE, MASCULINE and FEMININE.

  2. -How to determinate associated numbers.

Personal Tree of Life  Interpretation Elements

In the same way the birth day glyph reveals the personality, the characteristics for the FUTURE, PAST, MASCULINE and FEMININE day glyphs acquaints us more with these four elements.

For instance, an IK MASCULINE (wind) reveals a person who is fluid with communication and will get on more easily with IK men. A CAUAC PAST (storm) reveals a person with a heavy past or a karmic burden, and so on…

The more the number associated to the birth dayglyph is elevated, the more the person embodies the characteristics of the birth dayglyph.

For instance, a 1-IMIX is less archetypal than a 8-IMIX and a 8-IMIX, less still than a 13-IMIX.

This is connected to the maturing process which is characteristic of numbers. The “1” is the seeding and the “13”, the fructification of the seed (for more details go to the page about the 13 numbers).

In the same way, for the 4 poles of the tree (PAST, FUTURE, FEMININE, MASCULINE) the number associated to these poles are to be considered with the associated dayglyph specificities.

For instance, a 1-IMIX future is the future of a potential new beginning (IMIX) (1= the seeding) whereas a 13-IMIX future is the one of a totally substantiated new beginning (13 = the fruit).

One should also consider the values of the numbers associated to the FUTURE-PAST and FEMINE-MASCULINE dipoles. The dipole element which number value is superior to the other prevails.

For instance, a 4-AHAU person is oriented towards the future (12-LAMAT for the future vs 9-EB for the past) and towards the masculine (11-IX for the masculine vs 10-CIMI for the feminine).

Let us now study in a more detailed manner the PAST-FUTURE and MASCULINE-FEMININE numbers and axis.

Personal Tree of Life 13 Numbers Elements

If we look at the chart below we can see that:

To the value of the Day Glyph of yor Birth Day:

  1. -Add up 8 for the FUTURE dayglyph

  2. -Take off 8 for the PAST dayglyph

  3. -Add up 6 for the FEMININE dayglyph

  4. -Take off 6 for the MASCULINE dayglyph

If one total sums up over 20, take off 20 to result,

If one total is inferior to 20, add 20 to result,

For example, let’s take the AHAU case:

- BIRTH sign, AHAU (20)

- FUTURE dayglyph: LAMAT (20+8 = 28 = 8)

- PAST dayglyph: EB (20-8 = 12)

- FEMININE dayglyph: CIMI (20+6 = 26 = 6)

- MASCULINE dayglyph: IX (20-6 = 14)

Let us, for instance, take the 4-AHAU case. The result boils down to:

- BIRTH number: 4

- FUTURE number: 12, which combined with the day glyph is: 12-LAMAT

- PAST number: 9, which combined with the day glyph is: 9-EB

- FEMININE number: 11, which combined with the day glyph is: 10-CIMI

- MASCULINE number: 10, which combined with the day glyph is: 11-IX

The final result for a 4-AHAU person is:

For the FEMININE-MASCULINE Axis:

- 12 birth numbers out of 13 (from 1 to 6 and from 8 to 13) have the same orientation, which means they boil down to a masculine oriented person with identical differences between feminine and masculine numbers (+1).

- Only one birth number (7) is feminine oriented with a strongly marked difference which the major possible one (-12).

For the FUTURE-PAST Axis:

-10 birth numbers out of 13 (from 1 to 5 and from 9 to 13) have the same orientation which means they boil down to a future oriented person with identical differences between future and past numbers (+3).

-3 birth day numbers (6, 8 and again 7) are past oriented with a strongly marked difference (-10).

In short:

- 92,3% of the people (12 birth numbers out of 13) are masculine oriented versus 7,7% feminine oriented people (1 birth number out of 13)

- 77% of the people (10 birth numbers out of 13) are future oriented versus 23% who are past oriented (3 birth numbers out of 13).

- 77% of the people are thus future and masculine oriented,

- 15,3% of the people are thus past and masculine oriented,

  1. -7,7% of the people are thus past and feminine oriented.

(“Curiously” there are no future and feminine oriented)

The past and feminine orientations are definitely a minority and as such, they are far from standard. The Mayan astrology, when regarded this way, gives the image of a future oriented mankind and though slightly, towards masculine values. Moreover, the past or feminine oriented persons have strongly marked differences, even the highest ones for the feminine which implies a heavy imbalance in their personal tree of life.

Number 7 is thus a particular case with minority orientations and a strong double imbalance. The 7, according to Kenneth Johnson, is the true final number as in an unial representation, an horizontal sequence of numbers starting with 1 ends with 7 and not with 13. Besides, the 7 is arithmetically placed in the middle of the 13 number series. Consequently, it is both a static and finishing point. No doubt, here is the connexion with death. Anyway, the Mayas do not practice rituals on the number 7 days which they call “dead days”.

As the Mayan astrology goes, the number 7 day is not unlucky but rather a day of indecision in the way of Libra in western astrology. The feminine orientation could be viewed as a return into the mother’s womb, the past orientation as the digestion of that one, all this in order to better approaching a new birth. As for number 7, please read Kenneth Johnson’s article entitled the mysterious number 7”.

If number 7 is seen as a “death” or a stoppage before a new birth (hence the indecision) then the 6 and 8 numbers, the two other past oriented numbers, could be interpreted as making the balance of one’s life just before dying as far as the 6 is concerned and as the nostalgia of a previous life immediately after birth for the 8.

If, furthermore, the 13 numbers are considered to be a circle and that number 1 succeeds to number 13, it appears that:

- 5 is the birth number of the “future” maturation pole

- 6 is the birth number of the “feminine” maturation pole

- 7 is the birth number of the “masculine” maturation pole

- 8 is the birth number of the “past” maturation pole.

“13” as the maximum value, represents indeed the coming of the “fruit” which specificities are those of dayglyph.
